MAYAS PRECOLOMBINOS
Los antiguos Mayas crearon una de las mas sobresalientes civilizaciones de la América pre-colombina, caracterizada por su arte, su bien desarrollado calendario, arquitectura, y sistema de escritura jeroglífica. El periodo clásico, durante el cual los mayas alcanzaron su clímax, duro desde el 250 hasta el 850 d.c. La población se incremento, surgieron ciudades con centros ceremoniales más elaborados, y se increriento la separación entre las clases sociales. Habiendo vivido en diferentes medios ambientales, incluyendo la selva tropical, los mayas dejaron a su paso cientos de ruinas monumentales. Los centros ceremoniales surgieron, florecieron y desaparecieron en poco menos de mil años. Estos impresionantes centros, con pirámides, templos, palacios y monumentos de piedra esculpida en bajo relieve llamadas estelas, fueron habitados por la elite de la jerarquía social: nobles y religiosos, militares y otros especialistas tales como artesanos y músicos.
PRE-COLUMBIAN MAYA
The ancient Maya created one of the most outstanding civilizations of pre-Columbian America, Characterized by its art, well developed calendar, architecture, and hieroglyphic writing system. The Classic period, during which the Maya reached their prominence, lasted from about A.D. 250 to 850. Population increased, cities with more elaborate ceremonial centers arose, and separation of social classes widened. Living in varied environments, including the tropical rain forest, the Maya left behind hundreds of monumental ruins. The ceremonial centers arose, flourished, and vanished in a little under a thousand years. These impressive centers, with pyramids, temples, palaces, and low-relief sculptured stone monuments called stelae, were inhabited by the elite of the social hierarchy – nobility and religious, military and occupational specialists such as artisans and musicians.
