A verb is reflexive when the subject (performer of the action) and the object (the receiver of that action) are the same. For example, the verb in the sentence “I see you” is NOT reflexive because I (subject) and you (object) are not the same person.

However, if I look in the mirror and see myself, the verb is reflexive because I (subject) and me (object) are the same person. Another way of looking at a reflexive verb is to say that the action doesn’t go anywhere.

Some reflexive verbs happen to be irregular verbs. Some are stem-changing verbs. This means they have a change on the stem. On all forms, except on “nosotros”. When two “e” s in the stem on the word, you need to change the second “e” (the first one is a prefex, that never will change).

“Irse” mean: to go away. Example: Ya me voy. Butt: Voy a la escuela.

This is another in our series of pictures and posts from the choco museo (chocolate museum) visit in Antigua (http://guatemala.chocomuseo.com/). The picture board below covers cacao beans and how they are used in chocolate.

The information is provided first in Spanish, then converted to English.

Los granos de cacao, base para elaborar chocolare, son las semillas del arbol de cacao. Se encuentran cubiertos por una pulpa blanca y dulce, dentro de las mazorcas del cacao. Una variedad de quimicos, incluyendo la teobromina que es muy similar a la cafeina, dan a las semillas un sabor amargo.

Los granos de cacao solo pueden germinar dentro de 2 semanas de haber sido cosechados.

Cacao beans, the base for making chocolate are the seeds of the cacao tree.

They are found inside the cacao pods surrounded by a sweet white pulp.

A variety of chemicals, including teobromine that is very similar to caffeine, give the seeds a bitter flavor. Beans Can only germinate within 2 weeks of being harvested.

Cuando los monos, aes, huamanos o otros animals abren las mazorcas para Saborear la deliciosa pulpa, escupen las semillas amargas.

Esta es la adaptacion que el arbol de cacao ha evolucionado de manera que sus semillas tocan el suelo y crean arboles nuevos.

When monkeys, birds, human or other animals break open the pods to reach the delicious sweet pulp, they spit out the bitter tasting seeds.

This is the clever adaptation that the cacao tree evolved so that its seeds hit the forest floor and sprout into new trees.

The information board below discusses cacao pods and part of their growing process — first in Spanish, then converted to English.

Las mazorcas de cacao son los frutos del arbol de cacao. Las flores que llegan a ser polinizadas se convierten en este fruto de forma rugosa y ovalada. El proceso de maduracion dura alrededor de cinco meses.

Es comun que las flores y las mazorcas esten juntas en el mismo arbol durante todo el ano

Cacao pods are the fruits of the cacao tree. Successfully pollinated flowers mature into this ribbed and oval fruit.

The ripening process takes about five months. It is quite common to see both flowers and pods together on the same tree throughout the year.

La gruesa cascara de la mazcora de cacao esta rellena de mucilage una pulpa dulce y blanca que rodea los granos amargos de cacao. Cada mazorca contine de 20 a 60 granos de cacao.

The thick shelled cacao pod contains “mucilage” a sweet White pulp, that surrounds the bitter cacao beans. Each pod contains from 20 t 60 cacao beans.

Las mazorcas sanas y maduras se pudriran en el arbol a menos que un animal o un hombre las arranque.

Las mazorcas se encuentran en varias colores, entre, ellos Amarillo, verde y morado.

Healthy mature pods will eventually rot on the tree unless picked by an animal or farmer.

Cacao pods come in a variety of colors including yellow, green and purple
